David Winpenny was educated at Ripon Grammar School and at the University of Birmingham, from where he graduated in English.

After a twelve-year teaching career he joined the Countryside Commission as Coordinator of the 'Watch over the National Parks' Campaign, which culminated in a Festival of National Parks at Chatsworth, at which HRH The Princess of Wales was Guest of Honour.

He then worked as an information officer for the Yorkshire regional office of the Central Office of Information and as head of editorial services at a PR Company in York, where the local newspaper described him as 'York's finest wordsmith'.

He set up David Winpenny Public Relations in 1991.

David is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild.

He was a contestant on BBC Radio's Brain of Britain in 1981, on BBC Television's Mastermind in 1986 and a finalist on BBC Radio's Mastermind in 1999.
His interests include architecture, literature, music, photography, travel and walking. He is a life member of the National Trust and of the Society of the Protection of Ancient Buildings. He is also a deputy lay clerk at Ripon Cathedral.

He is Co-Chairman of Ripon Civic Society.  WIth his wife Sheila he founded and runs Ripon Young Musicians of the Year, a competition for musicians up to and including age 18 who live, are at school or have music lessions in the HG4 postcode area.

David is currently researching and writing a book, 'Up to a Point - In search of pyramids in Britain and Ireland'.
